When someone asks you ‘Why…?’, tell them ‘Because I exist.’ What greater reason could be offered than the lucky chance that the universe conspired for you to be, and enabled you to act.

Just in: Great Musicians hate listening to music

This weekend I learned from a friend of mine who plays drums in a band that ’simple’ music was not enjoyable to listen to.

I was driving him around while listening to my latest mix cd and he criticized the Nickelback song that came on. His claim boiled down to: he could learn the drums for the song in under two weeks and he couldn’t enjoy something like that. A group with as much exposure as Nickelback should push some kind of musical envelope. His own band he informed me, left audience members wondering ‘how did they do that’ after successful shows.

Bullshit I say. If mastery leads to an inability to enjoy something less complex then your own awesome creations, what’s the point? The better you become the less of the world you’re able to enjoy. Some reward for pursuing something you love.

Neither should complexity naturally lead to success. If a five star chef served me some t-rex steaks I would surely wonder how he did that. And I just as surely wouldn’t finish my meal if t-rex tasted like dog poo.

First Post

Hey tumblrs. This is my first shot at blogging. My friends say it’s all the rage, like facebook… a year ago. I can’t wait to find out how the internet will massage my ego next year. Then we can all look back and point out all the ways this internet socializing tool was incomplete, like we did with myspace… a year ago. Until then, welcome to my thoughts.
